School Nurse

As a general rule, if your child doesn’t feel well enough to make it through the entire school session and participate in all activities, they should stay home.

• covid-like symptoms
• diarrhea
• vomiting 
• fever above 100.4°
• difficulty breathing weeping or contagious rashes that can’t be covered

In order to excuse your child's absence(s), please submit an Absence Request Form on the BSD website. You may also send in a written note to submit to the front office. 

The School Nurse’s Office can treat students with a variety of minor illness and injuries. Sometimes a child is just too sick to be at school or may have had an injury that needs to be evaluated by a doctor or other advanced practitioner.  In these cases, it’s very important that we can contact a parent or guardian. If we cannot contact the adults on the Emergency Card, we will call an ambulance. Please complete an Emergency Card and update us with any changes to phone numbers, emails, and emergency contacts.

A big part of the school nurse’s role is to screen children for potential health problems. Vision and hearing screenings are completed for students in kindergarten, second and fourth grade. Postural screenings are completed for students in fifth grade. You will be notified if your child needs an evaluation due to a failed screening. 

Vision screening is hands off and uses a machine to asses their eyes. The hearing screening requires the child to where a headset and raise their hand when they hear a tone. There are 6 tones for them to hear. Postural screenings are completed by assessing spine alignment, range of motion, and other problems that can impact your child's posture and health.

Accidents happen! Occasionally, your child may need a change of clothes while at school. We have a small supply of clothes for students who don’t have their own backup. Please send an extra set of clothes with your child to keep in their backpack or classroom in the event of an accident. 

Students entering into the Brandywine School District will need documentation of 5 doses of DTaP, 4 doses of IPV, 3 doses of Hep B and 2 doses of MMR and Varicella. New enters will also need an up to date physical and a TB Risk Assessment. Lastly, kindergarten students will need 2 separate lead levels to enter school. Please send all medical documentation to the nurse.
